The suspect in the early-morning downtown Austin shooting has been identified as 49-year-old Larry Steven McQuilliams.

At around 2:20 a.m. on Friday, November 28, McQuilliams allegedly drove around downtown Austin firing at the Mexican Consulate, United States Federal Courthouse and the Austin Police Department Headquarters before being subdued by an Austin Police Department Sergeant.

Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo said the APD Sergeant was stabling horses by the police headquarters when he heard the commotion. The sergeant opened fire at McQuilliams who fell to the ground and died from a gunshot wound. Police are unsure whether McQuilliams shot himself or was struck by the sergeant.

A full video of the APD’s press conference is available through Austin’s ABC affiliate KVUE.

Acevedo reported that the victim was wearing a vest and that a bomb unit was called to look at the suspect and his vehicle. No IED or explosive devices were found.

Around 2 p.m. on Nov. 28, Austin police announced that the suspect’s residence was secured and safe via their Twitter account.

No one was reported injured in the incident and many witnesses commented that the suspect fired only at buildings. Some reports estimate McQuilliams may have fired up to 200 rounds.

As of Friday evening, no motive for the shooting has been established.
