Paul Simon joined mourners for the funeral of slain Sandy Hook Elementary first grade teacher Victoria Soto on Wednesday (Dec. 19). According to the New York Daily News, the singer picked up his guitar with no introduction and performed 'The Sound of Silence' midway through the memorial service for the 27-year-old, to her gathered family and friends. It was Soto's favorite song. Afterward, he returned to his seat without applause, "just a hushed and reverent silence."

The death of Ravi Shankar has cast a pall over the classic rock world as the many artists he inspired or worked with reflect on their memories with the famed sitar player. Shankar died at age 92 on Tuesday night in San Diego after complaining of breathing problems this week. He'd recently had heart valve surgery.

Paul McCartney is one of more than a dozen celebrities who've joined the Justice Collective, a group aiming to raise money with a charitable cover of the Hollies and Neil Diamond hit 'He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother.' The song -- to be released on iTunes Dec. 17 -- will support the families of the Liverpool 96 as they fight for justice concerning a 1989 soccer tragedy at Hillsborough Stadium in Sheffield, England. It's available for pre-order now.

In addition to extensive coverage of the Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan, Regan covered several Olympics and Super Bowls before his death on Sunday (Nov. 25). His daughter Suzanne Regan says the cause of death was cancer.

Because We Can -- the Tour will begin in Canada, before scheduled but not yet revealed dates take the group through the U.S., Latin America, Europe, the Far East, Africa and Australia. B.B. Cunningham Jr., a member of the '60s group the Hombres and in his later years a part of Jerry Lee Lewis's band, was shot and killed in Memphis on Sunday morning (Oct. 14). Police say the 70-year-old was working as a security guard when he heard gun shots and went to investigate.
