After an off-season filled with scandal and controversy, seeing college football back on the field was a welcome sight. While early season games for Top 25 teams often feature blowouts of lesser opponents (and we certainly had several of those), this week we were also treated to a pair of matchups between Top 25 teams as well as some outstanding individual efforts. Some questions were answered, other teams now have even more. Here is a recap of all the action in the Top 25 this weekend.
It’s the most wonderful time of the year. School is back in session. Everyone’s favorite team is undefeated. Every fan just knows their team is underrated and will be better than expected. And we can finally stop focusing on offseason scandals and politics. Yes, college football is finally back.
With that, here is everything you need to know to be ready for week one action.
The Jerry Sandusky scandal at Penn State had many innocent victims. First and foremost are the young boys abused by Sandusky, then there are the current and future Penn State players and students who will suffer for years under the weight of the NCAA punishments. And now you can add Neil Diamond to the casualty list.
The Penn State Board of Trustees announced Thursday it is firing longtime football coach Joe Paterno, as well as university president Graham Spanier. Both officials are accused of not reporting to police knowledge of sexual abuses against children by a member of their staff.
It was an exciting week in college football as five ranked teams went down to defeat, records were broken and several long-running streaks (including one in Austin, TX dating back to 1893) came to an end. Here are all the highlights from this week in the Top 25.
Week Three is in the books, and it was an exciting one featuring a slugfest between two top five teams, the end of the nation’s longest winning streak and a bunch of outstanding individual performances. Here is this week’s wrap-up from the top 25.
#1 Oklahoma 23, #5 Florida State 13
Oklahoma’s defense dominated the game, holding the Seminoles to just 27 yards rushing, forcing three turnovers and getting six sacks. Oklahoma sophomore receiver Kenny Stills had seven catches for 125 yards, including the eventual game-winner, a 37-yard jump ball reception for a touchdown with 7:00 to go in the fourth quarter.
The Sooners were ranked #1 for the first time in 1954, the second year of Oklahoma’s NCAA-record 47-game winning streak, which lasted from 1953-1957. They have spent at least one week in the top spot in 19 different seasons.
University of Minnesota Golden Gophers head football fcoach Jerry Kill spent Saturday night in a Minneapolis hospital after suffering a seizure on the sidelines during the waning moments of his team’s 28-21 loss to New Mexico State.
While many of this weekend’s games were just tune-ups for showdowns to come, there were several great battles to keep things exciting, including Michigan’s last-second win over Notre Dame, South Carolina’s shootout victory over Georgia and Auburn stuffing Mississippi State at the goal line to win their 17th straight game.
With that, here are the highlights from the top 25 and other games of interest this week:
As you might expect this time of year, there are not a lot of marquee games and only one matchup between top 25 teams (#3 Alabama vs. #23 Penn State). But there are still a lot of intriguing matchups that will start to tell us who are contenders and who are pretenders
