Carl Edwards conserved his fuel en route to winning the Coca-Cola 600 NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Charlotte Motor Speedway in North Carolina on Sunday night. With the win, Edwards qualified for the Chase, NASCAR’s “playoff” that helps determine the series champion each season.

After Edwards refueled during a pit stop on Lap 338, he seized the lead with less than 20 laps to go as the leaders pitted for fuel down the stretch. Edwards held on for victory when the race avoided any late caution flags.

Greg Biffle finished second. Dale Earnhardt, Jr. took third. Pole-sitter Matt Kenseth and Martin Truex Jr. completed the top five.

Kevin Harvick retained the season points lead, with Truex Jr., Jimmie Johnson, Joey Logano and Earnhardt, Jr. his closest competition.

NASCAR’s Sprint Cup series resumes next Sunday in Delaware.
