I spoke with Lt. Jason Taylor of the Lubbock County Sheriff's Dept. regarding parents checking  neighborhoods before taking their children trick or treating this Halloween.

He encouraged parents to go to Lubbock's Sex Offender Registry List and make sure they don't go to a house in their neighborhood which may be the residence of a registered sex offender.

Lt. Taylor added that unless a sex offender is on parole and under adult supervision with the criminal justice system, it is not illegal for them to have their light on Halloween night.

His best advice for parents is to "stay with your kids and don't cut them loose."

"Get on the website and know who is in your area. Also, it may not be a sex offender at an unknown house, but someone who may not like children, has had a bad day or has a violent dog or animal on the premises," he said.

Knowledge is power. The power to protect our children and their innocence from potential predators.
