Joe Arrington Cancer Center is holding a free, non-invasive prostate screening this Saturday, August 29, 2015 from 8 a.m. to noon.

The screening comes just before September, which is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. Non-invasive means that it's only a blood test known as a Prostate Specific Antigen (or PSA) test.

The screening will take place at the Lubbock Diagnostic Center building, east of the main hospital Covenant Medical Center, Building 14, located at 3506 21st St.

There is plenty of parking on the east side, and, according to the Joe Arrington Cancer Center's Joe Velasquez, free "man food" will also be provided. Velasquez said they will "forego the muffins and fruit and serve breakfast burritos and things men like."

Velasquez also told us that prostate cancer is the second leading cause of death related to cancer, next to lung cancer, in men. In 2015 alone, over 220,000 men will be diagnosed with a new case of prostate cancer.

On a personal note: One of my family members is still alive today because of a prostate screening, which led to early detection of prostate cancer.

Do yourself a favor and take the short time and free, non-invasive blood test, this Saturday between 8 a.m. and noon. It could save your life.
