This morning as I walked about at Buffalo Springs Lake, I saw twenty two deer. Seventeen of the them were white tails grazing down below the dam on the southeast side of the lake. I spotted five mule deer going up the canyon side just west of the dam. The mule deer ears are hilarious to see, especially on the little ones! One of our frequent visitors is a squatty little bird, the black crowned night heron. I saw this trio on the upper end near the shore. We have several “fishermen” out here at the lake. I spotted both the blue heron and osprey flying above the surface of the lake perusing for that good catch. Later I spotted the osprey with a fish in it’s talons that appeared to be about 10″ in length as he flew by.

You just never know what you will see hiking out at Buffalo Springs Lake! Y’all come!

Birding is an interesting hobby followed by many enthusiasts through outTexas. Out at BuffaloSpringsLake, we are fortunate to see some really interesting birds during the year.  Of course we have the usual ducks and Canadian geese, but occasionally we come across some unusual looking critters.

As you can see in the photos, we have seen these shoreline birds just this week. The Black-necked Stilt and the Stilt Sandpiper are new ones for me.  The American Avocet and Snowy Egret visit periodically in our shoreline waters.

So if you are interested in viewing many species of birds, come out to the lake!  I have over 50 kinds of birds that I have identified without even searching them out! Pack your camera and binoculars and explore our “Oasis in West Texas”.

The fall season is on us here at the lake. With the milder temperatures, the various wildlife are slowly migrating to our backyard.

These photos below were taken in the last week. I see the two mule deer siblings early every morning. The ears are so prominent and very funny to see on these small deer.

On a rainy morning last week, I shot the photo of the red tailed hawk. There are many birds of prey at the lake including the red tailed hawk, osprey, peregrine, and even a golden eagle was spotted out here last year.

The “spike” white tail deer was spotted down below the dam. There are many birds that are beginning to show up this time of year.

I took the photo of the American egret near the beach the other day. I got lucky and the reflection makes for an interesting portrait.

Fall is my favorite time of the year. It gets better as the different species of ducks, birds, and deer start heading to the Oasis in the Wild West, Buffalo Springs Lake. If you enjoy wildlife photography, hiking among the animals and birds, camping under the stars, and fishing for that big bass, then head on out to the lake!

I made rounds a little after seven this morning. As I drove down the dam road, I spied a couple of does eating on the south side. The buzzards on the guard rails scattered as I approached.

As I ventured up on the top of the lake property, I spied a turkey hen meandering along the road. On the bottom near one of our beaches, I ran into those funny looking avocets that are the skinniest looking critters with their turned up beaks.

Just another morning here at Buffalo Springs Lake where you never know what kind of bird or animal you might run across!

And don’t forget to head out for the ultimate outdoor show on July 3rd as Buffalo Springs Lake will do their big fireworks show. It’s a must see!

I recently spotted a tuxedo-clad fisherman out at the lake. The off- white ruffles on his chest complemented the dark color of his sides and shoulders. His intensity as he fished was exceptional. The steely look in his eye proved he was a determined taskmaster as he surveyed the surface of the water.

With one swift down motion he grabbed the unsuspecting fish and continued his vigilance for that one sure lunker. As he lit in a nearby tree, this tuxedo-clad fisherman began to tear apart the small fish with his beak that he held in talons as big as a man’s hand. This magnificent osprey that appeared to be decked out in a tuxedo was enjoying his catch and meal of the morning.

While watching the osprey soaring overhead and ultimately skimming the surface of the lake to get his catch, I marveled at the speed and precision he showed while snatching the unsuspecting fish. The osprey has to be one of the most beautiful and magnificent animals I have ever seen. I am a big fan of birds of prey, but I had never gotten to see an osprey up close. His stature is different from the average hawk in that his size, wingspan, and speed appear to be superior.

Whether you are a fisherman or just enjoy watching wildlife in and around the water, Buffalo Springs Lake is the ideal place to discover that unique bird or animal. I know, because I have. Come to the lake, just 5 miles east of Loop 289 on FM 835.
