Soft Cell's 'Tainted Love' is one of the signature hits of the 80's. But, it's a actually a cover of a song recorded in the mid-60's.

It was originally recorded in 1964 by American singer Gloria Jones, who was a major star in the U.K. As a matter of fact, she was such a big star that she was given the nickname 'The Northern Queen of Soul'.

Jones was actually a songwriter at Motown before she had a hit on her own with 'Tainted Love'. She was also the girlfriend of glam rock artist Marc Bolan of the band T. Rex until his death in 1977.
