Kristi Weunsche, former Lubbock Police Officer and first degree Black Belt in Krav Maga defensive tactics and Taekwondo, stopped by the radio station and took me through some self defense tactics with our very own Doug Brannson as my "attacker."

Kristi had Doug put me in the bear hug. Then, she taught me techniques to get out of it.

First, you stomp the assailant's foot. Then, you use a knife movement with your hand and break their hold around you. Finally, you hit them in the groin (ouch!), deliver an elbow to their head and jaw and finish the onslaught with a side kick to their knee. This flurry of attacks helps immobilize them so you can flee to safety -- which I did! Check out the video above for proof.

We had a lot of fun with Kristi, but in all seriousness, it's important that we know these techniques, especially in vulnerable situations like walking to your car at night, with packages in your hand or on your cell phone. Women sadly face the possibility of violence every day.

Kristi said she is holding self defense techniques classes that protect us ladies in potentially harmful situations at the UMC Activities Center throughout the month of May.

After talking with my husband, he gave a resounding thumbs up on me taking this course. I'll see you there!
