Kool FM & the TTU Presidential Lecture and Performance Series Present an Evening With Judy Collins

Facebook / Jake Jacobson

The Spring 2013 Presidential Lecture and Performance Series continues with the Grammy Award winning and Academy Award nominated legendary folk singer and songwriter, Judy Collins. She will perform Friday, April 12th at 7:00 pm in the Allen Theatre, located in the Student Union Building of Texas Tech University.

Judy Collins’ career has spanned more than 50 years recording more than 40 albums, some with sales reaching gold and platinum status. She received a Grammy Award for Best Folk Performance for her 1968 song, Both Sides Now and winning Song of the Year at the 1975 Grammy Awards was her version of Send in the Clowns, written by Stephen Sondheim for the Broadway musical A Little Night Music.

Judy’s released a new CD, Bohemian (Wildflower Records), in the fall of 2011.  Released to coincide with the iconic folksinger’s 2011 memoir, Suite Judy Blue Eyes, Bohemian finds Judy Collins revisiting the late-’60s California music scene. Driven by her signature effortless soprano, the album features four new original cuts (“Morocco,” “Wings of Angels,” “In the Twilight,” and “Big Sur”) along with seven covers, including “Pure Imagination” from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and Joni Mitchell’s “Cactus Tree,” the latter of which finds the seemingly ageless Collins sharing vocal duties with Shawn Colvin. Elsewhere, Collins deftly tackles the Woody Guthrie workers ballad “Pastures of Plenty” and Jimmy Webb’s lively “Campo de Encino,” and offers up a lovely and austere rendition of the traditional lullaby “All the Pretty Horses.”

In addition to her success as a singer and song writer, Collins has authored seven books, including the inspirational memoir Sanity & Grace, focusing on the suicide death of her son and the healing process that followed. She and Jill Godmilow co-directed, Antonia: A Portrait of the Woman, an Academy Award nominated film about Antonia Brico, the first woman to conduct major symphonies around the world—and Judy’s classical piano teacher when she was young. In 2000, Collins founded her own record label, Wildflower Records - a grass roots artist driven label.

General Admission tickets are $15.00 and are available through all Select-A-Seat locations (806) 770-2000 or www.selectaseatlubbock.com.  TTU Students receive one free ticket with valid ID at the SUB information booth located at the entrance to the Allen Theatre on the campus of Texas Tech University.

Community outreach for this program was funded in part by the Sybil B. Harrington Endowment for the Arts of the Lubbock Area Foundation.
