Did you forget International Towel Day? Not to fret, there's still time to run to the store and get your loved ones a towel in honor of the, um, monumental occasion.

May 25 was declared Towel Day in 2001 in honor of author Douglas Adams, who wrote 'The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.' Adams, in chapter 3 of the novel, writes, "A towel, it says, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have ... More importantly, a towel has immense psychological value."

In honor of the "holiday," Adams fans are encouraged to carry a towel around with them on May 25, and TowelDay.org reported that numerous Towel Day events were planned across the globe, including a Towel Day Meetup in New York City and a towel drive in Salem, Mass.

Adams' science fiction comedy series was originally broadcast on the radio in 1978, and was later developed into a trilogy of five books published between 1979 and 1992, according to Wikipedia.

Think Towel Day is odd? Well, there's also International Bacon Day on the Sunday before Labor Day, Darwin Day on Feb. 12, International Sushi Day on June 18 and International Talk Like a Pirate Day on Sept. 19. Arrr!
