The top seven ranked teams asserted their dominance in week five as each rolled to convincing victories. Meanwhile eight ranked teams suffered losses as the list of undefeated teams was trimmed.

#1 LSU 35, Kentucky 7

LSU rolled up a 35-0 lead en route to an easy 35-7 victory over Kentucky in Baton Rouge. The top-ranked Tigers’ swarming defense limited Kentucky to just 45 yards of offense in the first half. It picked up a touchdown when cornerback Tyrann Mathieu scored after forcing a fumble in the third quarter. The Tigers (5-0, 2-0 SEC) recorded five sacks and 10 tackles for losses on Kentucky (2-3, 0-2). Quarterback Jordan Jefferson returned from suspension for LSU, but the Tigers kept Jarrett Lee as their starter. He connected with Odell Beckham Jr. on a 51-yard, second quarter touchdown. Jefferson, who was suspended for his role in a bar fight prior to the season, did score the first LSU touchdown when he was substituted into the lineup for a fourth-and-goal dive play in the first quarter.

#2 Oklahoma 62, Ball State 6

Oklahoma quarterback Landry Jones added to his Heisman Trophy candidacy by throwing 425 yards and five touchdown passes as Oklahoma clobbered Ball State. After recovering an onside kick to start the game, Ball State saw little go its way. Sooners defender Tony Jefferson intercepted passes on three consecutive second quarter drives by the Cardinals, and Jones tossed scores of 64 and 56 yards in the second half. Oklahoma (4-0) faces Texas next, while Ball State (3-2) heads into Mid-American Conference play.

#3 Alabama 38, #12 Florida 10

Alabama dominated Southeastern Conference rival Florida while registering a 38-10 victory over the Gators on Saturday night. Crimson Tide running back Trent Richardson scored two touchdowns and rolled up 181 yards, which marked his fourth consecutive game with 100-plus yards. Alabama (5-0, 2-0 SEC) has now defeated Florida (4-1, 2-1) three consecutive years by a combined score of 101-29. Florida quarterback John Brantley did throw a touchdown pass to Andre Debose early, but left with a leg injury in the second quarter. The Gators failed to sustain much offense in his absence.

#4 Boise St. 30, Nevada 10

Long known for its high-scoring offense, Boise State used defense to stop Nevada and propel the Broncos to a 30-10 win. Blessed with its own talented offense, Nevada struggled with its passing and running games and trailed 27-0 at one point. Running back Doug Martin rushed for two touchdowns and 126 yards for Boise State (4-0), whose star quarterback Kellen Moore was intercepted twice in the second quarter. Moore recovered to throw two scores, as the Wolf Pack (1-3) couldn’t capitalize on the miscues. The Broncos avenged last year’s loss to Nevada, which kept Boise State out of a BCS bowl game.

#5 Oklahoma St.

The Cowboys were idle this week. They’ll face Kansas at home on Saturday, October 8.

#6 Stanford 45, UCLA 19

Stanford extended the longest winning streak in the country to 12 games behind quarterback Andrew Luck’s 227-passing yards and three touchdowns in a 45-19 pasting of UCLA. Running back Stepfan Taylor gained 112 yards on the ground for the Cardinal (4-0, 2-0 Pac-12), who were never threatened by the Bruins. UCLA quarterback Richard Brehaut had 202 yards passing and two touchdowns, but the Bruins (2-2, 1-1) played from behind and could not stop the Cardinal offense. Stanford has outscored the Bruins 80-19 in the schools’ past two meetings.

#7 Wisconsin 48, #8 Nebraska 17

Montee Ball led Wisconsin with four touchdowns as the Badgers blasted Nebraska 48-17 in a matchup of top ten teams. It was the first Big Ten conference game for the Huskers, who moved from the Big 12 conference this past off-season. Quarterback Russell Wilson helped his team overcome a shaky start in front of a prime-time, national television audience and a sold-out Camp Randall Stadium. The Badgers (5-0, 1-0 Big Ten) also dominated the Nebraska offense by picking off quarterback Taylor Martinez three times. The Huskers (4-1, 0-1) led 14-7 early in the second quarter, but the Badgers reeled off 31 unanswered points prior to a meaningless, fourth-quarter Nebraska field goal.

#9 Oregon

The Ducks were idle this week. They’ll play California on Thursday, October 6.

Auburn 16, #10 South Carolina 13

Barrett Trotter’s nine-yard touchdown toss to Phillip Lutzenkirchen with under two minutes left gave Auburn a 16-13 upset win over tenth-ranked South Carolina. The Gamecocks tried to rally on their final possession, but the drive ended when time expired after the team gained a first down on the Auburn 29. Running back Michael Dyer rushed for 141 yards and a touchdown for Auburn (4-1, 2-0 Southeastern Conference), which held Marcus Lattimore to 66 rushing yards for South Carolina (4-1). The Gamecocks couldn’t avenge two losses to Auburn last season.

#13 Clemson 23, #11 Virginia Tech 3

Clemson used a dominant defensive effort to defeat Virginia Tech 23-3 and gain its third win over a ranked opponent in as many weeks. The Tigers defense yielded just 258 yards to the Hokies, who failed to score a touchdown in a game for the first time since 1995. After home wins over Florida State and Auburn, Clemson (5-0, 2-0 ACC) played its first road game. The Tigers scored in every quarter behind the leadership of quarterback Tajh Boyd. The offense was enough to wear down the Hokies (4-1, 0-1), who were unable to sustain drives while under pressure from the Clemson defense.

#18 Arkansas 42, #14 Texas A&M 38

Broderick Green scored on a three-yard touchdown run with 1:41 left to rally Arkansas over Texas A&M in a 42-38 shootout. Quarterback Tyler Wilson’s 510 yards passing and Jarius Wright’s 281 receiving yards were school records for the Razorbacks (5-1), who fought back from an 18-point halftime deficit. The Aggies (2-2), who squandered a 17-point lead to Oklahoma State last week, were victimized by a porous defense and an inability to put the game away late. Running back Christine Michael rushed for 230 yards and three touchdowns for A&M.

Kansas State 36, #15 Baylor 35

Anthony Cantele’s 31-yard field goal with 3:10 left led Kansas State to the 36-35 upset of Baylor in a game, which saw six lead changes. The Bears lost despite getting 334 yards passing and five touchdowns from quarterback Robert Griffin III. The talented Griffin tried to rally Baylor on the final drive, but was sacked once and had a pass slapped down by the Wildcats defense. Kansas State (4-0) got 113 yards rushing from Collin Klein to hand the Bears their first defeat of the season (3-1).

Pittsburgh 44, #16 South Florida 17

Running back Ray Graham gashed South Florida for 226 yards rushing and two scores as Pittsburgh trounced South Florida on Thursday by a 44-17 count. The Panthers (3-2) recorded their first win over a ranked team since 2008 in the convincing victory. South Florida trailed just 20-17 at halftime, but could not deliver enough sustained offense in the second half to keep Graham and Pittsburgh from wearing down the Bulls defense. The loss was the first of the season for South Florida (4-1).

#17 Texas 34, Iowa State 7

Texas rolled to a 34-7 road win over Iowa State in its Big 12 opener. Jaxon Shipley led the Longhorns with 141 yards receiving and a TD, as Texas (4-0, 1-0 Big 12) established a 34-0 halftime lead. The Cyclones (3-1, 0-1) got a late touchdown pass from quarterback Steele Jantz, but fell from the ranks of the unbeaten after they failed to stem the Longhorns onslaught in the second quarter.

#19 Michigan 58, Minnesota 0

Michigan crushed Minnesota in a 58-0 romp that gave the Wolverines their largest margin of victory since 2000. Quarterback Denard Robinson tossed two touchdown passes while running for another, but he was out of the game by the third quarter as Michigan cruised to a 38-0 halftime lead. The resounding victory gave Michigan (5-0, 1-0 Big Ten) possession of the Little Brown Jug, the ceremonial trophy that the teams have played for since 1909. The Gophers (1-4, 0-1) fell without injured quarterback MarQueis Gray, who had an injured toe. Replacement Max Shortell managed only 104 yards passing.

SMU 40, #20 TCU 33, OT

SMU needed a 19-yard touchdown pass from J.J. McDermott to Jeremy Johnson in overtime to record a 40-33 win over TCU. The victory was the Mustangs second win over a ranked opponent since being given the NCAA death penalty almost 25 years ago. SMU (4-1) had a commanding 16-point lead, but the Horned Frogs (3-2) rallied with 23 points in the fourth quarter in an attempt to extend their school-record 22-game home winning streak. Quarterback Casey Pachall threw for 304 yards and three scores for TCU, but it was not enough to get the win.

#21 Georgia Tech 45, North Carolina State 35

Georgia Tech topped N.C. State, 45-35, to mark its best start since splitting the 1990 national championship with Colorado. The Yellow Jackets raced out to 21-0 lead before putting away the Wolfpack with three touchdowns in just over two minutes of the fourth quarter. Orwin Smith rushed for three touchdowns for Georgia Tech (5-0, 2-0 ACC), while N.C. State (2-3, 0-2) has yet to defeat an FBS team this season.

#22 West Virginia 55, Bowling Green 10

Dustin Garrison ran for a surprising 291 yards and scored two touchdowns, as West Virginia grounded Bowling Green’s high-scoring offense in the 55-10 rout. Mountaineer quarterback Geno Smith added three touchdown passes for West Virginia (4-1), who only had 306 total rushing yards entering the game. The Mountaineers used the balanced offense and a suffocating defense, which held the Falcons to 217 total yards. Bowling Green (3-2) averaged 38.5 points per game prior to the defeat.

#23 Florida St.

The Seminoles were idle this week. They’ll take on Wake Forest Saturday, October 8.

#24 Illinois 38, Northwestern 35

Illinois quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase’s one-yard touchdown with 13 seconds left gave the Illini a big comeback win over Northwestern. The Wildcats led 28-10 in the third quarter, but couldn’t put away their intra-state rivals. The game-winning score added to Scheelhaase’s big day as the sophomore piled up 391 yards and three touchdowns passing for Illinois (5-0, 1-0). A.J. Jenkins caught all three scores, as he pulled in a school-record 268 yards. Northwestern quarterback Dan Persa, who played for the first time in almost a year after an Achilles’ tendon injury, tallied four touchdown passes on just 123 yards passing.

#25 Arizona St. 35, Oregon State 20

Arizona State rallied from an early, 13-point deficit to beat Oregon State, 35-20. The teams combined for seven interceptions and nine total turnovers in a mistake-filled game. The Sun Devils’ Cameron Marshall gained 80 yards rushing and had two scores in leading his team to the victory. Beavers quarterback Sean Mannion notched 341 yards passing, but threw four picks to his one touchdown. Oregon State (0-4) got 115 receiving yards from Markus Wheaton, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Sun Devils (4-1).
