The plan will save school districts money by not having as many make-up days.

KXAN reports that districts must provide at least 75,600 minutes of instruction. The old law required students to be in class at least 180 days of the year. Schools already have two make-up days built into the year, but if they need more they can now add time to a school day instead of making students show up for another full day and taking away a holiday.

The report gives an example that if you have two make-up days, you may need to extend some of the school days by five or ten minutes to accommodate.

For the most part, the response has been positive from parents. The new plan is also expected to save the state money as it costs more money when the school needs to make up and entire day.
