An accident involving a pickup truck and a semi Thursday night (Feb. 19) killed one in Lubbock.

According to Lubbock police, the crash occurred at E. 50th Street and King Ave. The semi was turning onto 50th Street when a pickup truck, driven by 40-year-old James Ray Poyner of Slaton, Texas, collided with the semi's trailer as it made the turn.

"It appears the 18 wheeler was at the stop sign at 50th and attempting to turn to the west. The pickup was driving eastbound on 50th at what appears to be a high rate of speed," said Lt. John Hayes with the Lubbock Police [quote via KAMC News]. "There's extensive skid marks on the road but he was unable to stop and collided with the semi truck and went underneath the semi truck."

Poyner was pinned inside his vehicle, requiring Lubbock Fire Department and EMS crews to use the jaws of life to remove him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the semi, Luis Hernandez, 36, was not injured.

The Lubbock Police Accident Investigation Team was called to the scene and is investigating the crash.
