A member of the armed forces is facing the toughest battle of his life.

US Army Sergeant Brandon Hinman, 26, returned home to New York from Afghanistan earlier this month to prep for the birth of his twins, due in May.

As reported by Polly Wogg of Big Frog 104 in Utica, Hinman’s wife, Jenna, however gave birth prematurely on March 10 to twin girls, who weighed 3.6 and 2.6 pounds. While Hinman says his daughters are “breathing on their own and doing well,” Jenna’s condition took a turn for the worse.

She has a rare cancer that develops during pregnancy called choriocarcinoma that Hinman says ‘hides in the placenta through the entire pregnancy and as soon as you deliver it shoots through your body and destroys everything.‘

Jenna has experienced internal bleeding and was placed in a medically-induced coma, while undergoing chemotherapy.

Hinman says Jenna is day-to-day, adding, “This is only the second living case of a patient that’s made it this far. They call my wife a walking miracle."
