Should the NFL Dump the Extra Point Kick…Because It’s Too Easy?

YouTube

This week, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said that the league might consider dumping the extra point kick after a touchdown…because it’s TOO EASY.

He said, quote, “The extra point is almost automatic. I believe we had five missed extra points this year out of 1,200 some odd [attempts]. So it’s a very small fraction of the play, and you want to add excitement with every play.”

Technically, they’re called ‘Point After Touchdowns.’ And since 1984, the success rate on them hasn’t been below 95%. And Goodell’s numbers are legit: In 2013, kickers were 1,256 for 1,261 on extra points, which is a whopping 99.6% success rate.

Goddell added that IF the extra point kick is dropped…the best proposal he’s heard is that you’d just immediately get seven points for a touchdown…and you COULD still opt to “go for two” to get an additional point.

The catch is, if you failed, you’d go back to just getting SIX points for the TD.

It’s unclear when the league’s competition committee would discuss this, but no change is expected for the upcoming season.

For what it’s worth, San Francisco 49ers kicker Phil Dawson is NOT onboard. He Tweeted, “Eliminate PATs? Success rate too high? QBs better be careful. The forward pass is becoming increasingly efficient. #PenalizeProgress.”

You can find video of Goodell’s comments at NFL.com.

Would YOU mind if the extra point kick was abandoned? Is there another solution that you’d prefer? What about just making it a longer kick? Instead of the current 19- to 20-yard kick, maybe back it up 10 or 15 yards?

The success rate for 30- to 39-yard field goals is just under 90%. Or there’s also this AWESOME suggestion: Make the player who scored the touchdown kick the extra point.  It won’t happen, but it’s a funny thought.
