As recently as four years ago, funk legend Sly Stone was living in a home in Napa Valley, CA that was large enough to be described as a compound.

Those days are gone now, as Stone — whose group Sly and the Family Stone was one of the most successful acts of the late 60s and early 70s — has lost his home and his fortune due to poor financial management and crippling bouts of substance abuse.

These days Stone lives in a white camper van, which is usually parked in front of a house in the economically depressed Los Angeles neighborhood of Crenshaw. The retired couple that owns the house provides Stone with meals, and their son acts as his assistant and driver.

Stone doesn’t seem all that unhappy about his living arrangement. “I like my small camper,” he told the New York Post. “I just do not want to return to a fixed home. I cannot stand being in one place. I must keep moving.” Plus, he has enough space to record music on his laptop.
