It's summer, and that means we are enjoying summer activities, food and fun. But how can you do so and protect your skin and health?

Did you know that 1 in 5 Americans will be diagnosed with skin cancer? Skin cancer is also the most common form of cancer in the U.S. And sun exposure is the most preventable risk factor for all skin cancers, including melanoma.

Jennifer Gorman with United Supermarket families talked with us about ways to protect yourself and still enjoy summer.

She said to always wear protective clothing while out in the sun, such as long sleeves, a wide brimmed hat and sunglasses.

Avoiding sun exposure between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. also helps. Slather on sunscreens and don't use anything less than an SPF 30. "And if you're not sure, then get SPF 50 to make sure you are protected," Gorman told me.

She also said that certain fruits and vegetables that help protect your skin, reverse the ravages of sun damage and boost your health overall.

Lycopene-containing fruits and veggies are rich in antioxidants. Watermelon and tomatoes are your best bets. Dark blue and purple fruits like blackberries and blueberries are great, too. And don't forget carrots. They're not just great for your eyes, but your skin, too.

So have fun this summer, but be careful and protect your skin, your health and your life.
