Lubbock is chocked full of run-of-the-mill bars and clubs. A few really stand out because of their atmosphere, the clientele, the games or specialties of the house. Robbins Nest stands out because they're kind of a combination of all of those things.

I have a close friend who is a regular at 'The Nest'. You'll usually find him (along with his girlfriend and the occasional random person) sitting under the big, black Bud cowboy hat in the corner of the bar. Yesterday he invited me to join him there to catch up and have a beer.

Full disclosure: This isn't really an uncommon occurrence.

Let's do the rundown of this legendary joint!

Atmosphere:

  • If you weren't a smoker before you stepped into the place, you will be by the time you leave. EVERYBODY in there smokes.
  • The ceiling is VERY low. That's not really important or anything. It's just something you'll notice.
  • The bar itself is 'unique' to say the least. It's built like a corn maze for some reason. That's the best way I can describe it. It's sort of like a horseshoe with inlets so the bartenders can walk up to you and deliver your drink. You'll just have to see it to understand what I'm trying to say.
Clientele:
  • You'll see every kind of person imaginable at Robbins Nest. Bikers, business people on their 'lunch break', lawyers, doctors, cowboys, and college kids. If it's a type of person, you'll see 'em here. Also, the cowboys are usually in a heated game of shuffle board.
Games:
  • As mentioned above, shuffle board is VERY popular. The cowboys are usually the ones playing, but they're friendly guys and will be more than happy to play with you. Just remember: they take shuffle board VERY seriously.
  • They always have the newest version of Golden Tee
  • If someone asks you to play a game of pool, play a game of pool. It's kind of an unwritten rule of the house.
  • Same goes for darts.
Specialties of the House:
  • There is only ONE and it's important. GIGANTIC BEERS. They have all of the usual domestic drafts and they're served in a mug that's bigger than you would think was allowable by law. You can get smaller draft beers and bottles, but don't. Everyone will look at you weird.
Robbins Nest is at 5202 Marsha Sharp Freeway (Northwest corner of Marsha Sharp & Slide)
