The Last Living World War One Veteran in America Just Turned 110 Years Old

Approximately 65 million men fought in World War One.  Only three of them are still alive.  And one of them is American.

His name is Frank Woodruff Buckles.  And Tuesday, he turned one hundred and ten years old! Read Frank’s story on the next page.
Frank lied about his age so he could join the Army in 1917, when he was just 16 years old.  He shipped out that same year, served in the ambulance service in England and France and then escorted prisoners of war back to Germany.

By World War Two, he was out of the military, but was working in a steamship business in the Philippines.  He was captured by the Japanese and held prisoner for more than three years.

Now, Frank lives on a farm near Charles Town, West Virginia.  He fights with illness a lot (being 110, that’s pretty standard) but says he’s still in pretty good health.

The other two surviving World War One veterans are also from the Allied Powers – they both fought with the British.  One will turn 110 on the 19th, the other will turn 110 on March 3rd.

There’s no one still alive from the Central Powers – meaning the bad guys:  Germany, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the Ottomans, and Bulgaria.

That’s right.  U-S-A!  U-S-A!

Here’s a photo of Frank today:
