The New Prison Currency Is…Honey Buns?

Gorging on junk food has easily replaced smoking as America’s number one vice.  And nowhere is the change more evident than . . . our country’s prisons.  The cigarettesS inmates traded in prison have lost their value, and a new currency has stepped up.

And apparently, that currency is . . . honey buns, those generic, plastic-wrapped honey buns that they sell at gas stations and convenience stores.  (I first told you about them in September, when two prisoners in Florida brawled over them.)

Prisoners can buy the honey buns for about $1.25 each at the commissary . . . but they’re worth SO much more than that.  Here are some stories out of the U.S. prison system about the HAVOC being wreaked by honey buns.

Female inmates in Maryland used honey buns to sweeten a wine they’d made by fermenting their orange juice.

A death row inmate in North Carolina asked for a honey bun for his last meal, to go with his sirloin steak and popcorn shrimp.

In Virginia, a man’s lawyer saved him from the electric chair . . . so he paid the lawyer with the only currency he had, honey buns.

In Florida, some prisoners would trade honey buns for people’s Social Security numbers.  They ended up committing more than $1 MILLION in tax fraud using the numbers they got.

And finally, in both Michigan and Florida, inmates were killed by other inmates in disputes over stolen honey buns.
