It's Groundhog Day and all day today Kool 98 salutes those songs that lived in the 'shadow' of #1 hits. We pay tribute to the also-rans in music history...the #2 hits!

Gordon Lightfoot's 'The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald' is a #2 song that evokes sadness, mournfulness and memories of a terrible day on the lake they call 'Gitche Gumee'. The song is one of the most requested on the Kool 98 hotline and I'm always glad to play it. As a matter of fact, I usually strap on my headphones and listen intently for the full 6:26. It just never gets old to me.

What's surprising is that the song just barely missed the #1 spot on the chart in November of 1976. And what song would keep it out of the coveted position? None other than the atrocity known as 'Disco Duck' by Rick Dees & His Cast of Idiots:

You can't make this stuff up.
