There was only one new film released this past weekend: It's called 'The Identical' and it's a Christian-themed fable about what would have happened if Elvis Presley's stillborn twin brother had survived. Well, for reasons that should be obvious after reading that sentence, 'Guardians of the Galaxy' held onto the number one spot this weekend while 'The Identical' opened outside of the top 10, never to be heard from again.

With no real competition to speak of and buzz stronger than ever, 'Guardians of the Galaxy' took home another $10 million, bringing its current total to $294 million. That's more than 'Man of Steel,' a movie starring the most famous superhero of all time. That's crazy. What's even crazier is that the film will become the first 2014 release to cross the $300 million mark in just a matter of days. It's funny how Marvel Studios' biggest risk has become one of their biggest success stories yet. No one saw this coming and with a relatively dead September lying before us, the big question is just how far it'll go...

'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' held onto second place, but unlike 'Guardians,' it seems to be slowing down. With only $6 million earned over the weekend, the film sits at $174 million. That's a really strong gross for this film, but it's going to be a tough crawl to $200 million at this rate. The next few (mostly empty) weeks should help it get there, but it may be close.

In third place, 'If I Stay' held its ground, earning $5 million for a $39 million total. This little weepy was never going to do the business of 'The Fault in Our Stars,' but this is solid business for a movie with a specific audience that didn't cost too much. Movies that make teenage girls cry are currently "in," it seems.

'Let's Be Cops' remained in fourth place, earning $5 million for a $66 million total. Although it's not boasting the biggest numbers of this summer's comedies, it's showcasing some surprisingly strong legs. $100 million is out of the question, but this is is a good number. The same cannot be said for 'The November Man,' which continued to bomb in fifth place, It'll be a miracle if this thing sees $30 million.

The rest of the top 10 is full of films holding their ground or sinking further into the muck. While 'The Hundred Foot Journey' and 'Lucy' continued to establish themselves as sleeper hit and surprise hit, respectively, 'As Above So Below' and 'The Giver' continued to underwhelm. As is often the case with dead weekends like this, these movies aren't in the top 10 because people really want to see them right now, but because there's literally nothing else to see. Expect to see a lot more of this as we enter the dredges of September.
