Whitney Houston: The Tributes

Whitney Houston’s death was a huge loss for the music community and having it happen on Grammy weekend made it all the more impactful.

After Bruce Springsteen performed to open last night’s show, host LL Cool J led the audience in saying a prayer for Whitney.

Toward the end of the night, Jennifer Hudson sang Whitney’s version of “I Will Always Love You”, which Whitney originally sang for the soundtrack to “The Bodyguard”. (Here’s video.)

At the time of Whitney’s death, she was preparing for music mogul Clive Davis’ pre-Grammy party. The show did go on, and several people there had things to say about Whitney’s passing.

Tony Bennett, for instance, used Whitney’s death to call for the legalization of drugs. He said, “First it was Michael Jackson, then Amy Winehouse, now the magnificent Whitney Houston. Let’s legalize drugs, like Amsterdam, it’s a very sane city now.”

(Michael’s death was the result of PRESCRIPTION drugs. Whitney’s may have been, too. And that’s a whole ‘nother issue, because those drugs are LEGAL.)

(Here’s video of Tony onstage, giving a slightly different version of his “legalize it” speech to the crowd.)
