Weird Holidays - June 2012

The month of June is full of fun, bizarre and offbeat holidays that you can celebrate. We all know Father’s Day is on the third Sunday in June and Flag Day is June 14th, but what about the other lesser known, funny, wacky or just plain weird holidays in June? June is full of unusual holidays, almost one for every day. Who even knew National Yo-Yo Day existed?

Start off the month with free samples from Dunkin’ Donuts and Krispy Kreme for National Doughnut Day and then get outside for National Trails Day on June 2nd. Food lovers will be excited for the June holidays National Cheese Day coming up on June 4th, National Chocolate Ice Cream Day on June 7th, and a more healthy Eat Your Vegetables Day on June 17th. With summer just beginning, June is a great month to try new summer foods and outdoor activities – and maybe a little yo-yoing on June 6th.

Offbeat Holidays for June 2012

June 1st, National Doughnut Day: Originally created by The Salvation Army in 1938 to honor the women who served doughnuts to soldiers during World War I, National Doughnut Day takes place on the first Friday of June each year. Visit any participating US Dunkin’ Donuts restaurants on Friday, June 1st and receive a free donut with any beverage purchase. Krispy Kreme is also giving out free donuts for National Doughnut Day. Feel free to argue over which one is more delicious. (The answer is Krispy Kreme.)

June 2nd, National Trails Day: Whether hiking, cycling, horseback Riding, or more, get outside on June 2nd for National Trails Day. (You’ll need to work off all those Krispy Kremes.) Check out events sponsored by the American Hiking Society.

June 3rd, Chimborazo Day: On June 3rd, we celebrate Chimborazo, an inactive volcano that beats Mount Everest for the point on Earth that’s closest to the Moon and farthest from the Earth’s center. This is definitely one of the stranger June holidays.

June 4th, National Cheese Day: Who doesn’t love cheese? This June holiday celebrates everything from cheese soufflés to good, old-fashioned processed American sliced cheese.

June 5th, World Environment Day: This day comes from the United Nations Environment Program. The theme for this year is “Green Economy: Does it include you?” Also on June 5th is Fly a Kite Day, a great opportunity to get outside on an early summer day.

June 6th, National Running Day: Grab a friend or find a group run for national running day, a June holiday dedicated to promoting fitness. There are plenty of organized runs across the country. Also on June 6th is D-Day, National Drive-in Movie Day, National Applesauce Cake Day, and National Yo-Yo Day.

June 7th, National Chocolate Ice Cream Day: This one speaks for itself. Feel free to dig into a pint of Ben & Jerry’s or a waffle cone on this day.

June 8th, World Oceans Day: This year’s theme is “Youth: the Next Wave for Change.”

June 9th, Donald Duck’s birthday: Everyone’s favorite irate fowl debuted in the Silly Symphony cartoon ‘The Wise Little Hen’ on June 9th, 1934. Also on June 9th The Belmont Stakes, the third and final leg of the US triple crown of horse racing, takes place.

June 10th, Ballpoint Pen Day, Iced Tea Day: Two totally different June holidays celebrating cool things we take for granted.

June 11th, Corn on the Cob Day: Yum!

June 13th, Weed Your Garden Day: Get out there in the dirt and fix up your garden. You know you’ve been putting this off. And then plant some nice flowers.

June 14th, Flag Day: Often overlooked in favor of the 4th of July, Flag Day commemorates the adoption of the red, white and blue flag.

June 15th, National Flip Flop Day: Wear your flip flops to the nearest Tropical Smoothie Café and receive a free smoothie. June 15th is also the day to smile for Smile Power Day.

June 16th, World Juggling Day and National Fudge Day: Two fun June holidays. We don’t recommend juggling fudge, however. That could get messy.

June 17th, Father’s Day and Eat Your Vegetables Day: Don’t forget to call your dad! Also a good day to remind dad to put down the steak and eat his veggies.

June 18th, Ride Your Motorcycle or Scooter to Work Day: Blaring ‘Bad to the Bone’ on the radio is optional.

June 19th, Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day: Juneteenth commemorates the abolition of slavery. Also on June 19th is World Sauntering Day and Garfield the Cat’s birthday, aka the most important day of the year. Garfield will be happy to know that the day doesn’t fall on a Monday.

June 20th, First Day of Summer (Summer Solstice) and Ice Cream Soda Day: What better way to celebrate the official kick-off of summer?

June 21st,  Go Skateboarding Day: Grab your old board and hit the skateboarding ramp with the kids for this fun June holiday. Also on the 21st is Atheist Solidarity Day.

June 22nd, Take Your Dog to Work Day and National Chocolate Éclair Day: Two great, fun days. Just don’t let your pooch get into the chocolate éclairs.

June 23rd, Great American Backyard Campout: A great opportunity to pitch a tent and sleep outside on a gorgeous summer eve. This event is a fundraiser hosted by the National Wildlife Federation. Also on June 23rd is the United Nations National Public Service Day and National Pink Day, which celebrates the color and not the ‘Get the Party Started’ singer.

June 24th, International Fairy Day: Clap if you believe in fairies!

June 26th, National Chocolate Pudding Day: Dig in and enjoy everything from Jell-O pudding pops to good, old-fashioned pudding like grandma used to make. Also today is the United Nations International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking and International Day in Support of Victims of Torture.

June 28th, National Bomb Pop Day: Celebrate the red white and blue ice pops. Another June holiday to celebrate today is Paul Bunyan Day.

June 29th, Camera Day: Practice your Instagram skills now in preparation for this day that celebrates fun, creative photography.

June 30th, Meteor Day: Keep an eye on the sky on this day. A perfect holiday to use your camera (or camera phone) on.
